- garden plants
- Kristina Degtyareva
It's hard to imagine anything more uncomfortable than the exposed stone walls of your home or the less than aesthetically pleasing lattice fences in your garden. When the territory is filled with delightful flower beds, luxurious lawns strewn with bright flowers, you really want to look up and see the same beauty. Flowering vines help gardeners with this. They are able to grow vertically, clinging to any surface and entwining it with incredibly lush greenery and luxurious flowers. It is also important that by wrapping around the walls of the house, these plants can play a very important role in regulating the temperature in the room: in winter the home will be warmer, and in summer it will remain cooler longer. We have prepared material for you in which we will tell you about annual and perennial garden vines. Photos and names, care features, transplants and reviews from gardeners are waiting for you below!
Features of vines
In general, these plants owe their name to a French verb, which can be translated into Russian as “to bind.” The name fully justifies itself. Lianas are usually called plants that, when taking root, use any support in order to rise and receive more sunlight. Thorns and thorns, tendrils and suckers, stems and sticky hairs help the vines to gain a foothold on supports.
Experienced gardeners know that flowering vines come from tropical forests. There they had to fight for a place in the sun, in search of light they grew tens of meters, because they survived among tall trees. Of course, these climbing plants were domesticated. However, they can still cover an entire garden if you don't prune them promptly.
It is worth noting that the choice of decorative vines is truly huge. They can be divided into annual and perennial, tree-like and flowering, light-loving or shade-tolerant. Some vines can climb up on their own using any vertical surface, but many others will require special support and even tying up!
A novice gardener should know: flowering vines for the garden (photos and their names are waiting for you below) will allow you to create an incredibly beautiful design in the shortest possible time. In this case, you only need a small space. With the help of these plants you can hide from your neighbors, build a delightful gazebo, or decorate unsightly corners of your site!
Fruiting vines
Chinese lemongrass and grapes will help you get additional benefits in the form of delicious berries. The first plant is not particularly picky, but the second one will have to pay extra attention.
Photos of vines for the garden will show the variety of varieties, colors, colors of these irreplaceable vertical plants.
Flowering and tree vines
Plants can be divided into two main categories: tree-like and flowering. Flowering vines most often include annual or perennial crops that simply continue growing in the spring from where they left off in the fall. But the tree-like ones produce a large number of young vines with the arrival of the new season.
The care of these plants is significantly different: for example, there is no need to prune flowering plants in the spring; you can simply remove dried and diseased branches and shorten the vine if desired. But tree-like varieties need regular thinning, otherwise the plant will become too dense. Right now we bring to your attention a photo and name of perennial vines for the garden!
Perennial Lianas
Unlike annual Lianas, perennials are more popular among gardeners and landscape designers. This preference is due, first of all, to the ability of perennial Lianas to become a real decoration of the garden plot, create a comfort zone, and cover up unsightly buildings. In addition, there is no need to plant these vines in the ground every year.
Perennial vines include Climbing Rose, Actinidia, Wisteria, Honeysuckle, Clematis, Bougainvillea, Ivy, Maiden's Grape and other climbing plants.
Kampsis
This perennial beautiful vine is characterized by fairly rapid growth of stems. The first lashes can stretch up to 10 meters in length! 5 years after planting, Kampsis produces basal stepsons. Its stems are heavy, and therefore they require a solid base.
Gardeners note that this shrub is able to climb smooth walls thanks to its aerial roots. The most popular varieties include rooting, Chinese and hybrid campsis. They all tolerate winter cold well. However, their dormant period lasts quite a long time; campsis wakes up later than all the plants on the site.
This flowering perennial vine does best on the southern sides of the garden, where there is an abundance of bright sunlight. The leaves of Kampsis are about 10 centimeters long, it blooms from June to the end of August, the inflorescences are distinguished by red or orange shades, about 15 tubular buds can be collected in one bunch.
As for care, Kampsis is not particularly demanding. The only thing that needs to be done regularly is pruning and thinning the plant. Otherwise, you can end up with real thickets. The growth of roots should also be controlled: they can displace neighboring crops. Gardeners recommend digging a plastic pot into the ground, limiting the area for the roots of the campsis.
What are vines needed for?
A huge selection of vines helps solve many different problems in the garden and on the site, and perform the following functions:
- Decoration and design of a fence, wall or veranda of a house, gazebo on the site.
- Giving the garden unique beauty and attractiveness.
- Dividing the site into separate zones.
- Maintaining an optimal climate for the growth of certain types of plants, as well as for humans themselves.
- Covering the area from prying eyes.
- Attracting insects to pollinate flowering plants in the garden.
- Quickly create vertical hedges using annual varieties of vines.
- Growing vines to collect edible and healthy fruits.
- Creation of special shady corners on the site for relaxation in the summer heat.
Creating shade on the site with vines
Maiden grapes
This vine cannot boast of gorgeous flowering. However, it produces bright fruits that hang original from the branches. The liana stretches well, and it does not matter in which area it is planted - in partial shade or in the sun. Maiden grapes can be propagated by seedlings or cuttings.
You may need trellises for growing. The girl's grapes will cling to them with the help of their antennae. The garden vine is not particularly demanding to care for, but it requires annual pruning and thinning.
During the hot summer months, virgin grapes need to be watered. However, this should be done in moderation; excessive moisture can lead to rotting of the roots. Before the onset of cold weather, the vine must be covered, because the entire annual growth may freeze.
Care
Further care will consist of staking the plants. For this it is better to use soft tapes. Iron staples will cause certain troubles to the plant. They get very hot in the sun, and the grown stem will not be able to receive enough nutrients. A garter will be needed only at the first stage; later the tendrils and roots will find potholes and cracks on their own.
The vine will enjoy loosening, timely watering, fertilizing, and weeding. Most perennials tolerate winter well, but some plants will require additional protection from the cold.
Actinidia
Among the most beautiful flowering vines is actinidia. This plant is a close relative of kiwi. And gardeners call the fruits of this vine the main advantage. The three-centimeter berries, which have a yellow-green color, contain a large amount of useful substances, and they are also tasty. The following varieties of flowering vines are common in our country:
- Actinidia kolomikta with delightful leaves that change shade from bronze to green, and then to white and crimson;
- Acute actinidia with dense glossy green leaves, the length of its shoots is about 30 meters;
- Actinidia Giralda, growing up to 25 meters;
- actinidia polygamous with orange fruits;
- Actinidia chinensis is an eight-meter vine with dense leaves.
Delicious vines
Classic vines are some traditional agricultural crops - grapes and beans. Some varieties of pumpkins are grown on a vertical support. In this case, heavy fruits are suspended on nets or mounted on inconspicuous supports.
Today, the Far Eastern fruit vines have undeservedly lost their popularity: actinidia and lemongrass. By the way, the well-known kiwi “berries” that we buy in the store are nothing more than the fruits of a more southern species - actinidia chinensis. Two Far Eastern species are doing well here: Actinidia kolomikta and Actinidia arguta.

It should be borne in mind that actinidia are dioecious plants, so next to several female seedlings there must be at least one male one. The fruits of our “oriental raisins,” of course, are not as large as those of their Chinese sister, but they are not inferior to it in taste and beneficial properties.
But as for the benefits, the clear leader here is another Far Eastern liana - lemongrass. It grows quickly and creates a beautiful thick screen. In autumn, heavy clusters of bright red berries stand out beautifully among the greenery. Schisandra is an unsurpassed biological stimulant. Just a couple of spoons of berries, ground with sugar, have such a powerful tonic effect that coffee and tea will seem like only slightly invigorating drinks.
Features of care
The best place to plant this perennial vine in the garden is an area next to the terrace or veranda. In any other place you will need to make a special support for the plant. It is necessary to plant seedlings that are 2–3 years old in a permanent place. It is best to propagate actinidia by seeds, but quite often gardeners resort to the vegetative method, using cuttings, layering, and grafting.
Please note: if you decide to plant actinidia on your site, then every four years you will need to replace one of the main vines. You will have to cut out one old main vine and grow a new one to replace it.
What is good about actinidia? It is quite attractive during its flowering: the vine is decorated with snow-white flowers, the diameter of which is usually about two centimeters. An adult, overgrown liana will become a magnificent screen in your garden: it can curl an arch, cover outbuildings, and give your gazebo, terrace or veranda a unique charm.
Benefits of garden vines
Such plants will not take up much land, so they will be an excellent addition to areas lacking large spaces. They will gracefully decorate the most unassuming fence, visually enlarging the territory and gently delighting their owners with foliage, they will cover old or shabby buildings, turning them into charming houses of forest fairies or hardworking gnomes.
Green plantings can create an optimal microclimate in a particular area. In this case, capricious plants can be planted next to the growing vines.
Arches and pergolas entwined with vines will quickly transform the area into some kind of Mediterranean courtyard. And the berries that decorate some types of vines will be a good addition to the autumn harvest abundance.
Lianas will be a completely inexpensive purchase; for the most part, they are undemanding to care.
Decorative nightshade
Connoisseurs of rare ornamental crops have long paid attention to nightshade, which is also called potato vine. A wide variety of species allows this perennial vine to be used both in vertical plantings and in container gardening. Of course, we must not forget that all plants of the nightshade genus are poisonous and dangerous to humans. That is why, before growing ornamental nightshade in your garden, make sure that small children do not have access to this plant.
One of the most beautiful representatives of the nightshade family can be called bittersweet nightshade, also called wolfberry. The flexible branches of the vine literally creep along the ground. However, it can also grow vertically; for this it will need support. The average length of the lashes can be from 40 to 200 centimeters. Bittersweet nightshade begins to bloom in May. Its flowers have a pleasant purple hue. The inflorescence is pleasing to the eye until August, then the bright inflorescences are replaced by a large number of berries.
Varieties of nightshade such as false pepper and pepper are also common. They are usually used as indoor plants, but they can grow quite well in a container outside. In order to take them out of the room into nature, you will need to grow a meter-high bush and plant it in a large pot. These shrubs belong to the category of evergreens; they bloom in winter, and in May-June they form fruits that almost completely cover the crown.
Nightshade jasmine is a vine that reaches a height of two meters. It is best to grow such a plant on a support in a container. By the way, please note that the jasmine nightshade is a native of Brazil, and therefore it is simply not able to withstand the winter cold. Gardeners recommend moving it to a warm room before the onset of frost. Experts note: the soil for growing all varieties of nightshade must be permeable and loose. Stagnant water can destroy the plant's root system. By the way, nightshade does not need to be replanted; it can grow in one place for a long time. The main thing is to feed it in a timely manner.

Clematis
A distinctive feature of this perennial garden vine is that it clings to the fabric mesh with its neat leaves. Gardeners note: clematis is very capricious and does not immediately get along in a permanent place. It requires regular watering and plenty of sunlight. With the onset of autumn, the vine sheds its leaf cover and reveals thin shoots. Note that clematis differs not only in color, but also in the diameter of the flowers. By the way, if you remove faded buds in a timely manner, the plant can please you with repeated ovaries. There are several popular types of this vine:
- Clematis Jacquemand. The flowers of the vine have a pleasant purple color, the length of the shoots ranges from three to four meters, and the inflorescences do not have a special aroma.
- Clematis Integrifolia. A compact vine, the length of which usually does not exceed one and a half meters. The flowers are shaped like bells.
Caring for this vine is quite simple: it is necessary to moisten the soil in a timely manner and apply fertilizer. Before the onset of frost, gardeners recommend pruning the plant (this is best done in dry weather) and covering it. Please note: the cover must be removed in early spring, otherwise the shoots will dry out.
It happens that the clematis may need to be transplanted to a new location. Experts note that this can be done with a plant of any age. However, it is better to divide an adult plant into several parts - this will contribute to the process of rejuvenation of the vine!
Roots of the name
Consonant words are found in Latin, Greek, English and French. Which of them served as the forerunner of the name is now unknown. Each version has the right to exist.
Table: meaning of the word “liana”
Language | Writing | Translation |
Latin | lilium | thin, slender; stem |
Greek | λιάνα | sad song |
French | liane | wicker |
English | Liana Lion, Lioness | vine, loach lion, lioness |
The Latin, English and French versions refer to the plant of the same name - a climbing vine.
The Greek translation is associated with the hero of the same name in mythical tales. According to the first, Lin was the son of Apollo and the royal daughter Psamatha. The boy's mother gave him to shepherds to raise. One day a misfortune happened: Lin was torn to pieces by dogs. The angry god sent terrible disasters to Argos, from which many citizens died. Since then, in memory of the tragedy, the Argives sang a funeral song, in which the refrain “Ailinon, Ailinon” was repeated.
The other two versions tell of musicians named Lin. The first was killed by Apollo because he defeated him in the art of singing. The second suffered at the hands of Hercules, whom he taught music.
According to one of the Greek legends, Linus was the name of a musician who surpassed Apollo in the art of singing.

Wisteria
A magnificent fragrant liana with flowers can win the heart at first sight. This is not surprising: long racemose inflorescences can reach a length of about fifty centimeters. In addition, the culture has delicate openwork leaves, various shades of buds - blue, lilac, white.
Wisteria is ideal for decorating gazebos and pergolas, balconies, terraces and walls. Liana flowers bloom in May and delight the eye for two months! Gardeners say: closer to autumn, wisteria may bloom again. To do this, you need to follow a number of simple rules:
- It is extremely important to choose the right location - wisteria is best planted in sunny areas.
- It is necessary to prepare strong supports, because wisteria grows quite quickly and luxuriantly.
- You should monitor the level of soil moisture - do not allow water to stagnate, but water the vine in a timely manner.
- During the period when the plant enters the budding process, it will need fertilizer.
- For the winter, wisteria will need good shelter.
- The vine should be pruned twice a year. This will allow you to get more luxuriant flowering.
If the climate of your region does not allow you to grow wisteria (note that even the most cold-resistant varieties do not survive temperatures below -20 °C), do not worry! You can plant it in a large container, which you can bring indoors with the onset of the first cold weather.
Diseases
Almost all vine diseases are associated with water imbalance.
If you notice that the plant has begun to weaken and lose leaves, then it is quite possible that the reason is that its roots are rotting. This happens when waterlogging occurs and the pH of the soil shifts to the acidic side. But indoor vines shed leaves and if the air humidity in the room is too low, the leaves dry out just before they fall.

Dry air and lack of moisture lead to spider mites, aphids and scale insects growing in indoor vines. It is difficult to get rid of them: you will need to spray them twice with Fitoverm or Actellik insecticides.
So it’s better to prevent the disease by following all the rules of agricultural technology for vines, and then any of them will become a decoration for your home.
climbing rose
These luxurious vines are simply irreplaceable for creating a piece of paradise in your garden. Lush flowering usually begins in June and continues until the end of October! The plant is quite unpretentious, which is what breeders have worked on. In addition, roses are resistant to various diseases. This vine feels equally good in both partial shade and sunny areas.
In order for climbing roses to climb walls, they will need good support. Please note that the shoots are not able to stand on their own, and you will need to tie them up from time to time! If you direct the lashes horizontally, then even more buds will appear on them. Climbing roses need to be watered infrequently, avoiding stagnation of water at the roots. The plant will need shelter for the winter.
Annual Lianas
About 100 varieties of annual lianas are known. All of them differ from each other in the shape and color of the inflorescences, leaf blades, but what they all have in common is a long thin stem and the absence of side shoots. As a rule, such creepers are an excellent solution for decorating terraces, hedges, and walls. But for such Lianas to grow well, they will need a lot of light. Annual Lianas include plants such as Echinocystis, better known as “Mad Cucumber”, Sweet Pea, Thunbergia, climbing Kobea, Nasturtium and other species.
Patron Saints
The church calendar contains a biography of Lydia of Irriapolis. Some sources call her Liana and the patroness of all Lianas professing Christianity. The saint's memorial day is celebrated on April 5.
A girl can choose another ascetic as her patron, whose memorial day is close to her birthday or baptism. Then she will have two names: one for life, the second for God. The rule of two names applies to all religious denominations. It meets the requirements of secret magical practices. According to esoteric knowledge, the name is the key to the soul. Sorcerers, magicians, witches can, knowing it, have an adverse effect on a person. Therefore, in ancient times, a newborn was given two names, one of which was kept secret.
Supporting vines or half-lianas
A distinctive feature of supported vines is that they often cannot climb supports on their own and require tying or mesh trellises.
Lianas of this type include:
- climbing rose;
- jasmine holoflora;
- bush blackberry.
climbing rose
Climbing rose is widely used to decorate garden plots. It has a wide variety of species. The stems of a rose contain thorns, with which it clings to supports and rises up. Stems are tough and erect. Flowers can be of different colors and sizes depending on the variety. It has a long flowering period and is easy to grow. To continue the flowering period, you should cut off all faded flowers, this way you will provoke the formation of new flowers and make the bush more luxuriant.
Jasmine holoflora
This plant has weak branches that can spread along the ground or along a support. It is used to decorate gardens and plots; it has a beautiful decorative appearance during flowering, which begins in early April. It blooms with abundant bright yellow flowers, up to 3 cm in circumference. The shoots are covered with green bark and need gartering, as they are weak and unable to climb on their own. The length of the shoots is about three meters. Leaves appear after the vine has flowered.
Blackberry bush
This perennial shrub has erect stems that are covered with black and red thorns, complex alternate leaves, ovoid in shape. The flowers have a green calyx and white petals, united in thyroid inflorescences. After flowering, it forms shiny dark red fruits with small triangular seeds inside.
Lianas that made their name famous
There are many famous bearers of this name in history:
- Liana Isakadze (born 1946) - Georgian violinist and conductor, People's Artist of the USSR;
- Liana Gabriela-Ungur (born 1985) - Romanian tennis player;
- Lika (Liana) Nifontova b. 1963) - People's Artist of Russia;

- Liana Augustin - German-Austrian film actress and singer;
- Liana Balaban - Canadian film actress;
- Liana Diane - Liberato (born 1995) is an American film and television actress.
Classification of perennial varieties
Climbing vines are grouped into two categories: woody and herbaceous. The first of them continue to grow every spring from where they left off last year, increasing in length and multiplying foliage and flowers. The trunk becomes harder over time, resembling wood. The latter, if they do not fall off on their own, need pruning to ground level. In the spring, this root will sprout new shoots.
Tree crops are frost-resistant and not resistant to winter cold. They can withstand winter frosts well and do not need to be removed from their supports for the winter and covered.
In extreme frosts, the maximum damage that the weather can cause to them is the freezing of young branches. Cold-resistant vines require insulation.
Types of perennial lianas:
- a climbing rose that evokes the admiration and delight of lovers;
- Kampsis, which is called the “sleeping beauty”, with amazing gramophone flowers;
- beautiful vines are not a compliment, but the name of a variety of perennial climbing plant;
- actinidia with foliage that turns red in autumn and winter orange berries;
- girlish grapes, which wonderfully green up walls and hedges, changing the color of the foliage to burgundy by the end of the season;
- honeysuckle with an attractive aroma and edible fruits for butterflies;
- ivy is the most common garden vine, creating a continuous carpet of foliage;
- clematis with flowers of various colors, rivaling roses in beauty;
- wisteria, characterized by the density of flowers, due to which the leaves are not even visible;
- bougainvillea with delightful flowers and creeping shoots.
Among the perennial climbing plants there are ordinary vines, found everywhere, simple-minded and unassuming, not requiring much effort in care. More experienced gardeners take on the task of planting exotic plants that are adapted to our weather and deserve attention.
There are a huge number of wonderful weaving garden vines that allow you to transform a site and hide all its defects, create corners of comfort and joy in the garden.
climbing vines
A distinctive feature of these plants is that they are not able to rise to a height without support. Their stems wrap around supports, fastening to them with the help of spines, and climb up them. Supports can be simple structures such as wooden poles or wire mesh. When planting climbing vines, you should take into account its growth rate. This determines how far it should be from the wall of the house. If the vine is a fast-growing one, it is planted no closer than 20 cm from the wall of the house. Or supports. Slow-growing vines are planted 5 cm from the house. Lianas can be annual or perennial. Some of their representatives need stronger supports, as they grow powerful trunks that can damage drainpipes.
Lianas of this type include the following:
- Honeysuckle.
- Akepia.
- Wisteria.
- Kirkazon.
- Khmel, etc.
Wisteria
This is one of the most popular vine-like climbing plants, which is valued because of its abundant flowering and pleasant aroma. The color of wisteria flowers can be lavender, pink, white or purple. During flowering, the bushes are densely covered with flowers and look like one large flower. If you want to get abundant flowering, you should fertilize with potassium phosphate fertilizers in the spring. It should be borne in mind that wisteria is a perennial plant, which over time grows dense shoots that are heavy and covered with leaves and flowers. The support for it must be strong.
Akebia
Akebia is valued for its exoticism and beautiful flowers. It is found naturally in East Asia, China and Japan. Refers to perennial deciduous plants that have stems that change color depending on age. One-year-old stems are green or pink, while two- to three-year-old stems are brown or purple. The leaves are three or five-fingered, green in color, consisting of 4-5 stipules. Over the course of a year, actebia grows up to three meters. After the length of the stems reaches six meters, the plant should be replanted, since the root becomes very powerful, and the vine loses its decorative effect. Akebia begins to bloom in April for four months. The flowers exude a coffee-chocolate smell, thanks to which the liana received the second name “chocolate liana”. At the end of summer, the formation of fruits begins, which are a pink-purple berry, 6-8 cm in circumference with a dense texture and a waxy coating. The berries are edible, have a juicy raspberry flavor and chocolate aroma.
Hop
Hops are deciduous perennial plants, the stems of which curl clockwise, the shoots are tetrahedral, covered with sharp thorns. The length of the shoots reaches seven meters. The leaves consist of three to five lobes, heart-shaped with a sharp end. There are two types of flowers - male and female. Males are distinguished by their small size, green color and perianth, consisting of five leaves. The female ones are complex cone-shaped inflorescences, inside of which double curls grow. Flowering begins in late summer. Then nut-shaped fruits are formed, which are used in folk medicine as a sedative, diuretic, analgesic or disinfectant.
Kirkazon
This is a herbaceous perennial vine, which has a branched root system that turns into shoots, covered with large green ovate leaves with sharp ends. It blooms with large brown-red or small yellow flowers that are found in the axils of the leaves. After flowering, pear-shaped fruits are formed, inside of which there are small seeds. Flowering begins in late spring - early summer. In nature, kirkazon is found on the banks of reservoirs, in deciduous forests and fields. Contains a large number of elements that can dilate blood vessels and kill pathogenic bacteria.
Personality code
Pavel Florensky speaks of names as encrypted messages from the cosmos. Pierre Rouget applies physical and mathematical methods to the analysis of names. Boris Khigir observes the patterns of a person’s nickname and his behavior in society. All theories boil down to the belief about the fateful meaning of the name.
The life of one of my friends took a completely different direction when she changed her name. The parents named the girl Claudia. The name in the 60s of the last century sounded outdated, like an old woman. Therefore, they began to call her out loud as Clara. So seventeen years passed. Few people around her knew her real name. After graduating from high school, the girl went to the capital to enroll. She studied well, but her certificate was average. The family in which Clara-Claudia was raised was incomplete and dysfunctional. My father died, my mother was sick, no friends, no acquaintances, no relatives. They lived very poorly. Neighbors and friends laughed when the girl said that she was going to study at the institute. “Do you know how much money they pay to enroll?” It was about bribes, which flourished at that time in the higher education system. The first time Clara did not enroll. Arriving in the capital, I was carried away by the atmosphere of the freemen that reigned in the hostel. Night gatherings with coffee, wine and cigarettes did little to successfully pass the entrance exams. The next year, Clara again went to the capital. When she was thinking about how to avoid the mistakes of the past year, the thought came to her: “Call yourself Claudia! New name - new life." The girl loved change and internally agreed with this “proposal.” Now, meeting new friends, she introduced herself as Claudia. The name caused laughter, the guys greeted her with jokes: “Klava, I’m hanging around!”, “Klava, I’m hanging around!” But the name gave her new qualities, she became more patient and persistent. I surrounded myself with books, quit smoking and flirting with guys. The appearance also changed: severity and modesty replaced vulgarity and loudness. Having passed the entrance exams brilliantly, the daughter of a poor cleaning lady began studying at a university in the capital. A change of name led to a change in character, a change in character led to changes in life. This story illustrates the statement of the ancient Greek mystic Pythagoras of Samos: “A person’s name is the result of the action of universal forces that influence the subconscious of parents even before the birth of a child and force them to unconsciously choose the name that is suggested to them from above.” In this case, this intervention is obvious: luck was with the girl when she returned the name assigned to her by fate. Hence the conclusion: a name is destiny. But you can’t escape fate!
