DIY chainsaw brake repair video

Any drive mechanism, including a chainsaw, may fail over long periods of use. You should never rush to take a broken unit to a workshop, since repairing a chainsaw can be too costly.

If the user has at least some understanding of the structure of a gasoline saw and constantly works with it, he will be able to fix a not very complex malfunction on his own.

To repair a chainsaw with your own hands, you will at least need to find suitable replacement parts and a little patience.

Types of breakdowns

Most often, chainsaw breakdowns occur due to wear of moving parts or for reasons that have to be dealt with on site. Before starting repairs, it is important to correctly diagnose the causes of malfunctions, which can be divided into the following groups:

  • failure of the weakest link in the structure (this could be the engine or the chainsaw clutch);
  • damage to a number of auxiliary components (brake or chain lubrication system);
  • accidental breakdown or deformation of individual parts of the chainsaw structure (holder handle, bar or sprocket).

Depending on which group the identified breakdown is classified into, the appropriate approach to repairing the damaged mechanism is selected.

Engine malfunction can be due to several reasons, including failure of elements of the electronic ignition circuit of the chainsaw and malfunctions in the components of the fuel supply system. Repair may also be required if there is a malfunction in the piston group of the chainsaw.

How to repair a chainsaw starter with your own hands

Broken cord
Repair of a chainsaw starter after a broken starting cord is presented. Without a starter cord, the chainsaw becomes completely inoperable. There is no other way to run the tool. The repair is considered using the Partner P350S chainsaw as an example. Tricky, reliable starting of this saw requires pulling the starting cord at least 4-5 times. And this was the first malfunction of the saw - a broken cord. The cord does not break immediately. First, the protective stocking of the cord threads breaks. This lump prevents the saw from starting. It is better not to wait for all the threads to break and fix the cord in advance. You don't need to invent anything. Repairs should not be difficult. True, strict adherence to assembly conditions is mandatory. Step-by-step instructions with a diagram of actions with photos and videos are given below.

We are starting renovations

Disassembling the chainsaw starter

  1. Unscrew the three screws securing the starter cover. The included wrench and screwdriver is suitable for this process, but use a normal tool.
  2. We remove the starter. The chainsaw is equipped with a soft start mechanism; it is located above the cord reel.

  3. Unscrew the screw securing the soft start mechanism and the starter coil. Be careful not to lose the puck!

  4. We remove the soft start mechanism.

  5. Remove the cord winder.

    Starter coil

    The coil has been removed
. Having disassembled the starter and removed the remnants of the old cord, you can begin the repair.

Installing a new cord and assembling the starter

  1. We prepare a cord of suitable diameter, 1.2-1.3 meters long. A nylon clothesline was used for repairs :).
  2. We melt the ends of the rope over the fire so that it does not unravel.
  3. We tie a complex knot at one end. The node needs to be large in diameter. But when installed in a coil, it should not protrude outward.
  4. Thread the cord into the hole in the reel. We do not wind the cord!

    Knot on the cord

  5. We insert the coil into place. An installation error may have been made here. The reel has two slots, one of which must accommodate the coil spring hook. Install the spool so that it fits snugly into place. And the hook got into the slot. It is checked by turning the coil clockwise until a return force appears.

    Spring protrusion

  6. We install the soft start mechanism. The protrusion of the mechanism should fit into the recess of the coil.

  7. Fasten the fixing screw with washer.

    The screw is fastened

  8. We thread the second end of the cord into the outlet hole.

    The cord is released

  9. We thread the cord into the starting handle. We tie a large knot at the end of the rope. With a small knot, there is a chance that the rope will slip and the entire cord will be wrapped in the starter. To get the cord, the starter will have to be removed again. We check the reliability of the node.

    Fixing knot

  10. The most important moment! We release the cord loop inside the starter. We begin to rotate the starter mechanism clockwise without winding the cord! For this saw you need to make at least five revolutions. We fix the coil by hand. Pull the loop outward by the handle. Holding the cord and the mechanism, we allow the cord to be wound onto the reel. Watch a video.
  11. We check the operation of the mechanism.

  12. We install the starter in place and fasten it with three screws. The repair has been completed.

Repairing a broken or damaged cord using step-by-step instructions will take 15 minutes, which is much faster and cheaper than contacting a service center. In my case this is true. Watch the repair video.

Replacing the sprocket

The most common cause of a malfunction in this element is jamming of the chain due to its misalignment or significant wear of the chainsaw sprocket itself. If any signs of these deviations appear, it is necessary to carefully inspect the plane and teeth of the drive transmission element, paying attention to the depth of drift (it should not exceed 0.5 mm).

If severe wear or traces of deformation are detected on the sprocket body, it can sometimes be repaired, but if the malfunction is serious, a complete replacement is required. Regardless of the nature of the damage found, before repairs you will first need to remove the sprocket from the chainsaw, that is, completely free it from all retaining fasteners.

Note! To gain access to the sprocket, you will have to disassemble the entire drive unit of the working mechanism, including the air filter, clutch basket and much more.

Most chainsaws have a similar clutch layout. For disassembly, you should use a spark plug wrench, which usually comes with the chainsaw, a clutch remover and a piston stopper.

First, unscrew and remove the tire and remove the chain. Remove the top cover to gain access to the spark plug, unscrew it and install the piston stopper. Often a rope or cord is used as a stopper, but experts do not advise doing this. It is better to use a special stopper when removing the clutch. Remove the side cover, unscrew the clutch (clockwise!) and get to the sprocket.

In another option, the starter is unscrewed and the protection is removed in order to hold the unit that is spinning on the reverse side. The procedure for completely dismantling the main parts of the chainsaw is well presented in the video

All removed parts must be put in one place so that they do not get lost. You can take photos of the chainsaw components so that later after repair you can quickly assemble the tool in the reverse order.

The most common tool malfunctions

No matter how competently the unit is operated, problems occasionally arise in the operation of its systems. To fix them, you need to determine the cause. Knowing the design of a chainsaw, we can say that most often problems arise with the operation of the engine . However, do not forget about other components that are also subject to wear.

Problems with the power plant

It can take quite a lot of time to identify the cause of an engine malfunction. Among the main signs of failure, several main ones should be noted:

  • The engine does not start.
  • The power plant starts to work, but quickly stalls.
  • Maximum power is not achieved at idle speed.
  • There are interruptions in work.

When diagnosing a malfunction, it is necessary to use the method of exceptions. It is better to start checking with those reasons that will require a minimum of time to eliminate. Most often, a power plant malfunction is associated with the ignition system. It is the condition of the spark plug that can say a lot about the operation of the entire engine. First, using a special key, you need to remove this element and then check its external condition. The performance of the ignition system can be easily determined by sparking. When a strong and stable spark appears, you should proceed to inspect the fuel supply system.

The following problems are possible in its operation:

  • A clogged breather cap prevents fuel flow.
  • The fuel filter is dirty.
  • Insufficient fuel is supplied from the carburetor to the cylinder.

To eliminate the malfunction, you should disassemble the system and clean it thoroughly. Problems with fuel supply can be caused by contamination of the corresponding filter, which interferes with the process of creating a high-quality fuel mixture. If the chainsaw stalls under load, you should inspect the muffler, in which a large amount of combustion products could have accumulated. The most difficult problem is the malfunction of the cylinder-piston group. This applies not only to the repair of Chinese chainsaws, but also to products from well-known brands. In such a situation, it is practically impossible to do without purchasing spare parts.

Lubrication system and chain brake

When using the tool, special attention should be paid to monitoring the operation of the chain lubrication system . Most often, problems arise due to clogging of the channels through which lubricant is supplied. If there is a slight oil leak, you can continue working with the chainsaw. Otherwise, it is necessary to take urgent measures to eliminate the malfunction.

The first step is to check the tightness of the connections between the fittings and the tubes. It is quite possible that these parts will need to be replaced, but everything can be done by simply replacing the sealant. Don't forget about the oil pump, which needs to be checked visually. It must be replaced if there are cracks in the housing. Problems with brake operation most often arise due to contamination of the brake band.

Wet contacts

The presence of wet streaks on the working contacts of the spark plug means that a lot of fuel is entering the cylinder. This is most often explained by problems in the ignition system or improper adjustment of the chainsaw carburetor.

When troubleshooting this problem, first remove wet deposits from the contacts (use a dry rag or napkin for this), and then dry them well. To remove any remaining unburned gasoline from the cylinder, its internal cavities should also be thoroughly wiped and dried.

You can get rid of residual fuel in another way, namely: first turn off the gas supply, and then crank the starter several times.

Upon completion of all these operations, the spark plug is placed in its original place, after which the fuel tap is opened and an attempt is made to restart the saw.

As a chainsaw repairman, I share my advice after six months of work

Greetings dear readers.
For six months I worked in a workshop that specialized in repairing
gasoline tools . In this article I will share with you the main malfunctions that I encountered and how I dealt with them.

I found this job with the help of Avito, found an advertisement, called and the very next day I was fully at work.

I had little experience in repairs, but in six months I learned almost all the faults that came across almost every day.

Chainsaws were most often received for repairs

and
lawn mowers
, a rare exception were walk-behind tractors and “rammers”, which I was not so willing to take on.

The most basic reason

, due to which chainsaws and lawn mowers did not start, this is a clogged carburetor.
It's no secret that 2-stroke engines use fuel and oil in the percentage indicated on the filler neck, which is why over time the mixture of fuel and oil clogs the carburetor. The solution to the problem is to disassemble the carburetor and blow and clean it.
Therefore, during long-term storage, be sure to drain the fuel and oil. Further malfunctions

will go according to the degree of difficulty of eliminating them.

Despite cleaning the carburetor and completely blowing it out, this does not always help the engine start.

  • There may be several reasons for this

Incorrectly set ignition

Incorrect carburetor setting

Failure to comply with the oil to gasoline ratio when preparing the fuel mixture

  • Let's deal with the ignition.
The ignition system of chainsaws includes a high-voltage coil, a rotor with a magnet and an armored wire.
It often happens that the spark is weak and barely visible; adjustment is indispensable. It consists in setting the gap between the magnet and the coil, this is done as follows: we put a notebook sheet folded in two layers and fix the screws that secure the coil, the gap is set. You should also check the integrity of the armored wire
and, if necessary, replace it with a known good one.

In some cases, it is necessary
to completely replace the ignition coil in the absence of a spark,
followed by adjusting the gap described above.

You can talk about setting up a carburetor for a very long time; you can read this information
by clicking on the link .
Many people do not pay attention to the muffler when their saw is malfunctioning.

, but in a frequent case it is he who is the culprit of smooth operation; some saws have a mesh that can be removed and easily cleaned of carbon deposits, while others have it hidden inside, so such mufflers are more difficult to repair; anti-carbon deposits help.

It rarely happened that the saw did not work due to a faulty
spark
, but it is better to check its condition and make sure it is working before repairing.

The last step in solving a malfunction of a gas tool is a banal non-compliance with the oil to gasoline ratio

.
Always before you start making the fuel mixture, pay attention to the filler neck
;
the recommended ratio of oil to gasoline
.

Carbon deposits on contacts

If black carbon deposits have accumulated in the gap of the spark plug contacts, we can conclude that there is a malfunction in the fuel supply, namely, a violation of the proportion between the components of the mixture or bad oil. To eliminate the causes of carbon deposits, in the first case, you should carefully adjust the carburetor, and in the second, replace the oil with a more suitable one.

After this, you need to remove deposits from the contacts using an awl or any other sharp tool, and then clean them with fine sandpaper (preferably, “zero”).

If the chainsaw still does not start, you should make sure there is a spark between its contacts.

Loss of spark

When checking a spark plug for the presence of a spark, with the distributor cap on its head, you will need to bring the base skirt closer to the cylinder body to a distance of about 2-3 mm, and then pull the starter handle. If a blue spark appears between the contacts, we can say that everything is fine with it.

If a spark starts to jump only at a distance of 0.5-1.0 mm from the body, you should look for problems in the ignition system itself. If it is completely absent, first the high-voltage cable is checked with a probe or tester (for its breakage). If the continuity test does not show any irregularities, it will be necessary to check the distribution mechanism and the engine ignition coil.

Note! The spark may disappear due to a change in the size of the gap established between the working plane of the flywheel and the ignition module (it should be no more than 0.2 mm).

The required gap between these units is set using a special gasket of appropriate thickness.

If all tested components and mechanisms are in working order, the repair will consist of replacing the suspicious spark plug with a known working one. After this, you need to try to restart the chainsaw engine again.

Problems starting the engine

It is very important to correctly determine the cause of the malfunction, because otherwise we simply cannot eliminate it. If, when trying to start the chainsaw, there are no extraneous sounds (knocking, grinding, etc.), then very often it turns out that in fact there is no breakdown. For example, if you start the chainsaw incorrectly and pull the choke for a long time, the engine simply floods and it is very difficult to start it.

In order to properly start a cold chainsaw engine, set the lever or switch to the “damper closed” position. Then you need to pump the mixture into the carburetor, if there is a fuel priming pump. Pull out the starting handle until the engine resistance becomes noticeable, and vigorously pull in amplitude, moving your hand to the side. After two or three such movements, the engine should first start and then stall. If this does not happen, then you need to move the lever to the half-throttle position or simply to the working position and then continue to start the chainsaw in this mode. For many chainsaws, the “half throttle” is automatically locked when the air damper is pulled out. Some models have a key ignition switch; it is important to make sure it is turned on.

If the engine does not start, then the first thing to do is unscrew and inspect the spark plug. There are cases when at a plant in the cold season, the combustion chamber is filled with fuel. Then you also need to unscrew the spark plug, dry the combustion chamber by idling, clean the spark plug, screw it in and repeat the start. It is advisable to immediately check for the presence of a spark - put a cap with a high-voltage wire on the unscrewed spark plug, place it on the cylinder and pull the starter. Visually we observe a frequent blue spark - good. Screw the spark plug into place and start it. If there is no spark, change the spark plug and try again. No again - we check the connection of the high-voltage wire to the spark plug, the coil and the ignition system.

In general, the type of malfunction can be judged by the condition of the spark plug.

  • Dry. Most likely, the fuel mixture is not getting into the cylinder. The problem is not in the ignition system, so screw the spark plug back in and check the fuel supply system.
  • Wet, heavily splashed with fuel. The reason for the excess fuel mixture lies either in a violation of the starting rules, as described above, or in incorrect carburetor adjustment.
  • Covered with black soot. This may indicate the use of low-quality oil, an incorrectly adjusted carburetor, or an incorrectly calculated ratio of gasoline to oil. The spark plug should be washed, removed from carbon deposits with a sharp object (an awl or a needle), the electrodes should be wiped with sandpaper and placed in place.

When checking the spark plug, you need to pay attention to the gap between the electrodes: 0.5 to 0.65 mm is considered normal. A damaged or worn gasket must be replaced.

Problems with the fuel supply channel

Lack of normal fuel supply to the combustion zone is possible for a number of reasons, including clogging and carburetor imbalance (or problems with throttle control).

To accurately identify this malfunction, it is necessary to disconnect the supply hose from the fitting and check the fuel pressure. If the stream flowing out of it turns out to be weak, there is a high probability that the filter located in the neck of the filler tank is clogged. If contamination is visible to the eye, it should be removed and cleaned (if the filter element is severely worn, it is recommended to replace it with a new one).

The breather is checked in the same way, and if contamination is detected, it is cleaned with a needle. In case of violations in the carburetor adjustment, it is repeated again until a positive result is obtained. When examining the throttle valve cable and lever, make sure that they are intact and in their proper place.

Possible problems

The main problem that arises during repairs is the lack of necessary information on repairs. This is explained by the fact that many foreign manufacturers believe that the saw should be disposed of after a certain period of use. Therefore, many craftsmen have certain doubts, especially when repairing budget models.

But expensive professional models also create certain difficulties:

  1. The first problem is supplying expensive spare parts.
  2. For maintenance and repair of some components, special equipment is useful.

Of course, it is possible to replace original spare parts with Chinese analogues, but judging by the reviews, this method is of little justification. Such components produce only half the resource.

Chain lubrication and brake adjustment

Problems with chain lubrication can occur in the form of oil leakage, insufficient supply, or cracks in the base of the oil pump. To detect them, you should make sure that the tube is in good condition and that the connection with the housing fitting is tight. During repairs, detected cracks and leaks are sealed with sealant, and damaged tubes are completely replaced.

It is clear that to repair a chainsaw oil pump with your own hands, you will need certain qualifications and experience in such work. If problems are detected with its functioning, and even more so cracks in the housing, it is recommended to purchase a new pump unit and replace it with the faulty one.

The need to adjust the chain feed brake usually arises due to clogging of the links with sawdust or their accumulation under the protective casing. To eliminate these consequences, it will be enough to clear all places and individual units from blockages.
