Barbecue with a roof: stylish decoration of the area and functional design

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

  • practicality is the main advantage. A country grill with a roof can be used all year round, feeling comfortable;
  • the possibility of directed smoke removal, which will not disturb others during the process of preparing barbecue;
  • protection of the fryer and auxiliary equipment from weather conditions, which extends the service life, protecting it from destruction and rust;
  • the ability to organize additional space for preparatory work and placement of the company.

Flaws:

  • low mobility. The design is more often used in a stationary design because it has significant weight and is difficult to carry;
  • higher cost due to the presence of additional elements.

Making a simple barbecue

Metal barbecue manufacturing technology
Metal barbecue manufacturing technology

It is very important to choose the right material when making a barbecue. So, which metal is better? Sheets made of steel are ideal; the wider the width, the better. The legs can be made from the same sheet, previously bent along the entire length with a corner, to give it rigidity. It's great if you have a welding machine. Then all sides of the product are marked on a sheet of metal, the excess is cut off and according to the markings they are bent at an angle of 90º. The edges of the surface are welded along the entire length, and then the bottom is welded to the finished workpiece. The legs can be loosely attached to the product so that they can later be removed during transportation or long-term storage.

If there is no welding machine available, then the scheme will be different. Even when marking the frame, you need to add 30–40 mm on each side. From the side of the joint, this excess is then folded, joined to the other side and three holes are drilled through the joint: along the edges and in the middle. The surfaces are bolted. 4 cuts of 30–40 mm each are made from below along the ribs, carefully bent inward at a right angle. You will get a support platform around the perimeter, on which we place the bottom on top. This design is more than enough rigid to withstand coals and firewood.

After assembling the frame, you need to make holes in the side walls of the grill. The holes are made directly above the bottom. Holes with a diameter of 20–30 mm every 40–50 mm are optimal. The smaller the diameter of the hole, the more often they need to be made. These technological holes are necessary for inflating the coals and supplying air. After this, legs are made, which can be attached with bolts. Four bolts per leg are enough, two on each side. This will allow you to remove them later. If desired, the legs can be welded to the base of the grill.

Making a simple metal grill is very simple. It is enough to have a metalworking tool, sheets of metal, some free time and of course an important element - desire! However, not all people are satisfied with such a simple design, especially when they have to cook in not entirely suitable weather. How to improve a metal grill will be discussed further.

Main types and features of barbecues

According to the material they are:

  • metal,
  • made of bricks or blocks.

barbecue with brick roof

By design they are distinguished:

  • collapsible,
  • non-separable.

Collapsible ones, used for transportation to nature, are made of thin steel with a thickness of 1-2 mm, so that the structure is not too heavy. It is better to load them with coal rather than firewood. In this case, the grill will last longer: it will not burn out or bend immediately. Service life - 5-10 years.

Large and heavy non-removable kebab houses made of brick, thick steel or cast iron, with a massive roof, are installed permanently. Lighter metal barbecues with a roof are equipped with carrying handles and wheels. If necessary, they can be moved around the site and stored in a utility room.

By difficulty of execution:

  • simple;
  • with decorative elements, for example, forged;
  • original design.

Features of a barbecue shelter in the country

The design of the roof largely determines the distinctive features of barbecues under the roof. A canopy can cover just the brazier or barbecue grill, or protect the entire group from the sun or bad weather.

barbecue with a small gable roof

The design is made in such a way that smoke is collected and removed from the working area, for which a pipe is sometimes built into the roof. Also, water should not accumulate on it and snow should not linger. To do this, a flat roof is installed at an angle of at least 10 degrees or a sloping canopy is made.

The roof is made:

  • from sheet steel,
  • metal tiles,
  • corrugated sheets,
  • slate,
  • processed wood.

The first three options are more suitable. Barbecues with a roof made of metal, even thin ones, are the most versatile. Slate is quite heavy and less convenient to work with. In addition, it is less resistant to heat.

Corrugated sheeting is one of the budget materials for a simple-shaped roof

It is better not to make a canopy out of polycarbonate, although, unlike other materials, it allows sunlight to pass through. It can melt, be damaged by sparks, hail or rain, and will need to be replaced frequently.

Equipment

The standard package includes the main parts:

  • fryer,
  • roasting pan stand or legs,
  • visor supports,
  • roof.

The weight of the product is usually small, so the grill can be dismountable and portable.

Depending on the configuration, the standard may be supplemented with:

  • smoke exhaust pipe,
  • barbecue grill,
  • a stand or stove for a cauldron,
  • small cutting table
  • countertops,
  • washing,
  • woodcutter

Types of barbecue canopies

So, it is necessary to build a “roof” for the brick or steel brazier that the owners plan to place in the garden. The design depends on what kind of canopy is needed: on the barbecue so that it does not drip or behind the collar. Here, traditionally, you can choose two ways:

  • Build a real pavilion where you can place an outdoor grill and an entire kitchen with appliances and a dining table. This is convenient, especially when cooking barbecue means a collective process carried out by a certain number of cooks.
  • Make a barbecue canopy in the form of a small canopy that protects the brazier itself, ideally the one who is fiddling with the skewers.

In the first case, you will have to make a good investment: pour a strip or monolithic foundation, build a permanent roof, take care of an exhaust hood or a full-fledged chimney (pipe). A summer kitchen is a serious structure; problems with its construction arise at the stage of choosing a suitable plot of land.

In the second option, too much spending is not expected. Sheds for a barbecue house for a summer residence did not drive anyone into loans. But here you need to understand that in this case you still can’t do without a gazebo or an open veranda. You either already have a similar summer dining room, or sooner or later you will have to start building it.

No less interesting than the design is the division of barbecue shelters according to the type of materials used. Theoretically, stone, wood, and metal can be used as such. In practice, timber (board) cannot come into contact with fire.

They are used when arranging spacious sheds for preparing barbecue (read: summer kitchens) in combination with stone aprons that protect lumber from its destructive proximity to fire.

On the street, under a spacious wooden canopy, if you really want to, you can even build a Russian stove, but is it worth it?

Look at the awnings over the barbecue area. In them, brick or cobblestones are always adjacent to a lath or timber.

It's a completely different story for metal hearth canopies. If you look at the photo, you will see non-bulky, self-sufficient structures. They almost always do without stone, and wood is used for decoration and functional inserts, but in such small quantities that it cannot become the root cause of a fire. We will now start making the structure.

Forged barbecues with a roof, photo

The advantage of forged barbecues with a roof is their relatively low weight - they can be transported. Thanks to their diversity, forging elements make it possible to give even a simple product an individual character. Such barbecues, of course, are more expensive, but they are worth it.

The forged barbecue will plunge you into the Middle Ages. It will give not only delicious dishes, but also unforgettable emotions.

The top consists of three sections arranged with gaps through which smoke escapes. The roof, pillars and main structure are united by an openwork structure in the form of a web.

Compact, versatile design includes:

  • roasting pan, spit;
  • stove for a cauldron;
  • small cutting table;
  • shelf, woodcutter;
  • roof with pillars;
  • supports.

At the end of the kebab maker there are hooks for a scoop and poker.

A grill with a stove under a cauldron allows you to prepare pilaf in a cauldron while frying shish kebab. The oven for the cauldron can be built over the brazier or made as a separate structure with a door for removing ash.

The barbecue with a smokehouse to remove the smoke generated during smoking is equipped with an exhaust system with a pipe in the roof.

Collapsible option

A grill with a collapsible roof is in demand among lovers of outdoor recreation. As a rule, it has minimal equipment: a roasting pan, folding legs, a removable canopy, and holders.

We build a canopy from wood

In most cases, wood is used to equip a permanent resting place. This environmentally friendly material is not only well processed and easy to install, but also fits perfectly into the design of the site, especially if the structure is located among trees. Its small weight allows you to make a canopy over the barbecue with your own hands without outside help.

To create supports, pine beams with a section of 150x150 mm are used. It is advisable to use wood that does not have dark stains. Their presence indicates that resin was extracted from pine. Such wood is hygroscopic and therefore quickly rots. To install the supports, the contour of the canopy is marked on the site. In the corners and side lines, they dig holes with a side equal to 35-40 cm, a depth of 50-60 cm and fill them with concrete. An anchor with a fastening for support is installed in it. The distance between adjacent pillars should not exceed 2.5-3.0 m. If it is larger, the beams installed on them will sag under the load.

Wooden structure

Another option for fastening supports involves installing a channel or angle with a flange width of at least 50 mm into the concrete. The pillars are attached to them or mortgages using bolts.

In order to reduce the load on the fastening unit, a shelf is welded inside the channel, on which the base of the post rests. The supports are aligned vertically and connected to each other with planks. L-shaped cutouts are made in the upper part of the pillars, the lower flanges of which will be the base of the horizontal beam. A through groove is equipped on it, at the attachment point. Their dimensions should be such that when connected, the planes of the beams fit flush. These elements are fastened with bolts. The protruding ends are decorated with curly cutouts. Horizontal load-bearing elements will serve as supports for the rafters. The beams are supported by braces that rest on supports. You can watch the video for more details:

Roof installation

As a rule, a wooden canopy is equipped with a pitched roof. If a portable barbecue is used, then a symmetrical gable roof is erected. When building a solid brick oven-barbecue under a canopy, a single-pitch or gable asymmetric roof is usually installed. The rafters can be assembled on the ground, then the finished structure can be lifted and secured above. But for such work you need at least 1 assistant. If they gather on the roof, then all the actions can be performed alone.

Before installing the roof

Grooves are made on the rafter legs, with which they will rest on the supporting beams. In the upper part, the elements are secured with a ridge board. The step of their installation should be no more than 1 m. After this, the lathing is laid. It is made from edged planed pine boards 25 mm thick. The lathing is made without a gap between the parts, since it is also the ceiling of the canopy.

Upon completion of installation, the prepared surface is covered with film waterproofing material. The roof is being installed on it. As a rule, corrugated sheeting or metal tiles are used. This durable, lightweight and durable coating can be installed without assistance by one person. A wide range of colors will allow you to choose the most suitable option. A wooden canopy is not covered with polycarbonate: this is due to the difficulties that arise when attaching it to the sheathing.

Photo of a wooden structure

The area under the canopy is laid out with paving slabs. Wooden elements are impregnated with drying oil and varnished. After this treatment, the structure of the tree is clearly visible. You can also simply paint them with oil paint. A table and benches are installed under the canopy.

In the southern regions of the country, to protect from the scorching sun, the openings between the supports are covered with light fabric. Under such canopies, the use of an open barbecue without equipped hood is undesirable. Therefore, some owners install a hood with a chimney and an adjustable smoke hood height.

Forged lamps, flower stands and other elements are used to decorate the structure. The use of various handmade crafts and decorations will add individuality to even a mass-produced structure. Having created a canopy with your own hands, you can post a photo on your page on social networks and share the joy with friends and acquaintances.

How to make a barbecue with your own hands from metal with a roof

To make a barbecue under a roof with your own hands, you can purchase metal sheets or use improvised materials. And if you take a design approach, you will get an unusual kebab maker.

frame manufacturing

Materials and tools

For production you will need materials:

  • sheet steel 3-6 mm thick for a roasting pan;
  • steel sheets 0.8-1 mm thick or metal tiles, corrugated roofing;
  • metal pipe;
  • corners for supports;
  • fasteners - bolts.

It is better to take steel sheets, especially for a brazier, from heat-resistant steel grade 09G2S or 15HSND.

Tools:

  • welding machine;
  • Bulgarian;
  • drill;
  • scissors, hacksaw;
  • vice.

Dimensions

The dimensions of a handmade product are determined by the owner. The height is selected depending on the height of the kebab. Typically the height is 80-90 cm from the ground to the top edge of the roasting pan.

The height of the roasting pan is chosen within the range of 15-20 cm. The width is determined by the length of the skewers and varies from 25 to 40 cm. A sufficiently spacious roasting pan has a length of at least 60 cm.

The dimensions of the roof over the brazier depend on the configuration of the kebab grill. The design should protect not only the fryer, but also the area between the working surfaces. It is desirable that it be 0.5-1.5 m wider on each side of this zone.

Development of drawings

Several drawings with dimensions:

Assembly instructions

diagram for assembling a barbecue with a roof

  1. Transfer the dimensions of the future brazier onto the metal.
  2. Cut out the parts with a gap of 3-4 cm. This is needed for joining the parts.
  3. Drill holes for fasteners and air supply in the bottom of the fryer.
  4. Weld the frame parts or connect them with bolts and nuts.
  5. Assemble the roof and attach it to the frame.

Advantages of a barbecue with a roof

The presence of a roof is a sign by which one can distinguish between open and closed devices. It is not a mandatory attribute of the structure. The grill without a roof, made of brick, is an open brazier. A site can be set up near it where the preliminary preparation of products will be carried out. Setting up a barbecue under a roof in your country house has a lot of advantages:

  • the fireplace does not go out during rain and wind;
  • neat appearance;
  • comfortable operation;
  • a chimney is assumed.

Near the barbecue outside, you can create an area with a sink and countertop with your own hands. If you choose the option with a pipe, then when cold weather arrives, you will need to drain the water from it, otherwise it may crack. At the same time, a barbecue for a dacha with a roof has an appearance that deserves special attention, since it can fundamentally change the design of the landscape of the site.

If you carefully study the drawings of country barbecues with a roof, you can adjust them to the size of your site. They are presented in a wide variety on the websites. Using the drawing, you can first make a sketch of a barbecue or barbecue for your dacha. Before starting construction of the structure, you will need to read the installation instructions.

A convenient design is a grill with a collapsible roof. It should not only be functional, but also attractive in appearance. Preparing coals on such a device cannot but fascinate.

Compliance with safety regulations requires careful attention to the construction and operation of a barbecue on the street. If you need to move the device, installing it in the most suitable place, you can purchase a barbecue on wheels. This camping type design can be hidden under a canopy, and the wheels will allow you to conveniently move the device according to your own needs.

Independent development of the drawing should be carried out taking into account the scale of the structure. If you correctly adjust all the dimensions of the future barbecue with a roof, you will not need to cut large quantities of bricks. Using the drawing, you can calculate the required volume of bricks and other materials.
