Types of flower beds for the garden
The following types of flower beds and flower beds are used in landscape design:
- Border flower garden;
- Rabatka;
- Mixborder;
- A beautiful flower bed of flowers and stones;
- Arabesque;
- Parterre;
- Front garden.
The design of a simple border flower bed is the design of a striped bed with different perennial flowers. Placement along the building on the site.
To create a simple border at the dacha, a flower bed design such as a ridge is used. A flower bed can consist of different tall and medium flowers, not necessarily perennials, along the wall of a private house or path.
Mixborders are organized to place and create zones of the site.
A striped flower bed, a combination of several types of flowers, a mixborder, can also be used as a border or adjacent to the wall of a private house or other building.
Designing a beautiful round flower bed made of stones and assorted perennial flowers in the center of the garden is suitable for beginners. Stones combine interestingly with plants, perennial flowers and their leaves. A frequently popular example of a flower bed made of stones and flowers is the creation of an alpine slide in the area in front of the house.
The arabesque design is a beautiful bed of different medium flowers that form an interesting abstract pattern. You can plant colorful flowers and ornamental plants in the center of the garden in the shape of a butterfly.
Parterre is an original design of a flower bed in a country house made of perennial flowers and other large rectangular plants, located in the center of a private plot.
A front garden is a space with flowers and beautiful ornamental plants that separates a private house from the road in a dacha. Front garden design - entrance group in front of a private house or building.
Flower islands on the lawn
When the children have grown up and the lawn, which was used for children's games, has already served its purpose, it is worth reducing its area, creating flowering islands on it, and thereby giving the garden a new look. And if you plant such flower beds with unpretentious flowers, then lawn care will not take up a lot of your time.
Forms
The shape of flower islands can be any: round, oval, square, triangular or irregular geometric shape. The main thing is that the flower garden matches the style of the garden. In order for the flower garden to keep its shape and have a neat appearance, it is recommended to make an edging. Stones, bricks or special garden borders, metal strips and corners can be used as limiters.

Arrangement
In order to arrange a flowering island on the lawn, you should cut out the turf of a certain area and shape. Then fill the area with a mixture of compost and soil, and finally plant your favorite flowers.
Plants
To create flowering islands in the middle of the lawn, long-flowering perennials such as red day, catnip, rudbeckia or yarrow are best suited. If you want to change the picture of the garden from year to year, placing new accents, then you should pay attention to annuals, which go well with both perennial and bulbous flowers, and quickly fill the empty spaces formed after their flowering has completed. Bushy cosmos, bright rudbeckia, variegated petunia, elegant kobeya can compete with perennials.
You can build a flowerbed of herbs such as lavender, marjoram, rosemary - this is not only beautiful and fragrant, but also useful and practical. Decorative elements are the final touch when creating picturesque flowering islands among the lawn.
gravel bed
Would you like to create an easy-care gravel bed instead of a classic flower bed in the middle of your lawn? This kind of flower bed is best made using geotextiles, which allow water to pass through, allow gas exchange between soil and air, and prevent weeds from growing. First you need to remove the turf and dig up the soil. A few days later, when the soil has settled a little, we cover the flowerbed area with geotextile, in which we cut cross-shaped holes for the plants. We dig holes, fill them with fertile soil, then plant the plant itself. After planting, we fill the geotextile with gravel, level it and compact it around the plants. Gravel favorably emphasizes the shape and color of plants.
Water and other elements
The dullness of the lawn can also be diluted by decorative ponds. A pond in the middle of the lawn, surrounded by greenery and flowers, strewn with fine gravel, gives the garden coziness and creates a sense of volume.
In a small garden, ridges of perennials are appropriate, turning the lawn into a network of green paths. However, it is advisable to lay flat stone paths at the same distance from each other, so as not to leave marks on the grass while walking.
We would like to present to your attention photographs of some flowering islands that German amateur gardeners created in their gardens. Perhaps these photos will inspire you to start your own design experiments!
Blooming island of sedums
The May flower garden is decorated with decorative onions, columbine and poppies.
An oval-shaped flowerbed has a spherical acacia in the center; border stones will separate the lawn and flowerbed from each other. Two garden gnomes attract attention.
In the middle of the paved area there is a heather flowerbed. Boxwood, trimmed in the shape of cubes, gives the flowerbed a clear structure.
Decorative elements give the flower garden a curved shape as the final finishing touch
This flowering island radiates a certain magic of pastel softness. Roses, irises, salvias and geraniums in blue, pink and white colors are the epitome of romance, tranquility and elegance.

Where to begin?
Work on creating a flowerbed with your own hands includes several stages:
- Select interesting ideas, diagrams and photos of areas with successful landscape design, a choice of flowers for the dacha and ornamental plants that can withstand the climate of the area. Scheme of a private plot, designation of places for creating and placing flower beds and paths.
- To create a flower bed: flower seedlings, enriched drained soil, available materials, interesting decorative elements.
- Loosen the soil before planting perennial flowers. If using seedlings, pre-arrange the flowers in the flowerbed in pots to make sure the placement looks good.
- Plant the plants, decorate with improvised means and moisten the well-drained soil in the flowerbed.
Meadow at the dacha
To many, a meadow lawn resembles a Moorish or Alpine lawn, but there are some peculiarities. A meadow lawn is planted without leveling the soil surface, without a special substrate on the surface, but with the obligatory mixing of herbaceous plant seeds with wildflower seeds. Often, perennial grass and annual flowers are planted on the site so that they can be changed every year, but you can immediately select certain varieties to plant for many years, and then only replant.
Thus, by making a single planting and reseeding burnt or damaged areas just a few times a season, you will get indescribable beauty that will be the envy of all your neighbors.
Soil preparation and planting
Particular attention is paid to preparing the soil in the flowerbed and organizing the planting of flowers and other plants in the garden in the spring. Before planting the plants in the ground, we loosen the soil for the flowers. Mineral fertilizers are also used for the soil if you need to plant capricious flowers.
It is important to maintain the acidity level of the soil in the area. Most perennial flowers are planted in neutral soils, so you should not use granite, which acidifies the soil.
Before planting a plant in the spring in the area, it is also worth considering the depth of the root system (bulbs) of perennial flowers. A similar diagram can be found online or in the description of the seeds on the package.
Lawn with children's playground
In 90% of cases, the lawn is a decoration, not a practical green flooring for something useful. We suggest reversing the situation and making a lawn for children, for example, simply creating a playground.
Of course, you shouldn’t choose the most expensive grass for this, but in this case you won’t need to level the soil. You can mow such a lawn several times less often, and you won’t have to roll it, since trampling will happen on your own, with children’s feet. Beautiful, practical and no longer just a green meadow, but fun for your children!
A children's playground can be built independently, or it can be purchased from dealers or private craftsmen, since today there are enough offers on the market.
Which plants to choose?
The choice of plants depends on the type of flower bed to be planted in the garden. To create a beautiful border flower bed, an interesting mixborder, low annual plants, flowers such as:
- Pansies;
- Snapdragon;
- Daisies;
- Marigolds, etc.
Unlike tall and medium-sized plants, low-growing flowers do not create shade with their leaves; they look like a beautiful, multi-colored carpet. If you plant annual plants, you can change the ideas and design of the flower bed every year. But it is better to plant perennial flowers:
- Dwarf aster;
- Aquilegia;
- Gentian.
Tall and medium flowers that are more suitable for the garden include:
- Phlox;
- Rudbeckia;
- Gerberas;
- Peonies.
When planting tall and medium-sized flowers in the same flowerbed with low ones, you should take into account the flowers' needs for sunlight, because... taller plants will cover lower ones with their leaves. Ferns and mosses grow well in the shade of the leaves, as well as some low-growing flowers.
Landscape Design Trends
Before planting plants on the site of a summer cottage, it is recommended to watch master classes from experts on DIY decoration for beginners or photos, ideas and schemes for original placement.
Landscape design trends should be taken into account. Today, the principle of simplicity in the design of a round flower bed in the country is relevant; to implement this principle for the garden, choose:
- Monochrome plants (in the same color scheme);
- Flowers of the same or similar shape;
- Contrasting combinations that occur in nature, for example, the contrast of yellow and blue.
Large vertical flower beds are also popular. The vertical placement of flowers in the dacha is created through cascades of terrain, slides and ladders.
