Designer flowerbed Blue and white meringue round

Monochrome flower beds evoke universal admiration. And no garden flower is as popular as radiant white. Spectacularly sparkling in the evening, festive and elegant, white flower beds are always in the foreground. A truly vibrant effect of a white sea of flowers is not so easy to create. To do this, you need to take a more careful approach to planning and predict the change in the appearance of the flowerbed from season to season. But, of course, there are no impossible tasks. Careful selection of plants, allowing you to reveal the beauty of the chosen color in all its nuances and shades, allows you to take the design of lush white ensembles to a new level.

The magical influence of white

It is no coincidence that plants with white flowers, inflorescences and patterns on leaves are considered one of the most popular among both professionals and amateur gardeners. This color is a favorite in the design of any garden and an indispensable element that allows you to achieve stunning visual effects. From simply highlighting bright white tones and shading other colors to playing with optical color illusions, these plants are truly special.

You can fully feel the effect of plants with white flowers or with the same patterns on the leaves only in the evening or in secluded corners. White flowers glow, emit a soft, delicate, but surprisingly attractive glow.

If they are placed in the shade, the plants seem to compensate for the lack of sunlight and illuminate dark areas, adding depth and full-fledged sound to the design. In bright sunshine, white flowers can dazzle, but in the evenings, anywhere in the garden, their luminous effect is fully manifested.

This is the best option for decorating a flower garden near your home, terrace or recreation area. Evening relaxation surrounded by white-flowered plants will allow you to enjoy the beauty of the flower beds even when other colors fade and blend into the general background.

White flowers in gardens look mysterious, enigmatic and magical. White flower beds bring calm, harmony, promote relaxation and relieve unpleasant emotions. Such flower beds are both festive and solemn and inimitably tender.

The ability of white flowers to attract attention, to literally attract glances, is actively used in landscape design. White plants are the best means of creating illusions, expanding space, playing with the effect of moving away or approaching.

Secrets of white permanence for flower beds

Pure snowy white color is not found in the garden palette. Just like its exact opposite – absolute black. In garden plants we are talking about the lightest shades, close to white, which are perceived as white, pinkish, cream, light green, light blue, light lilac - when comparing different flowers with a seemingly white color, the play of the finest tones, which determines color. But by the nature of their effect, white plants are always the same.

When arranging any monochrome flower garden with a focus on white, it is worth considering that, in fact, such a name is very arbitrary. We are talking about two-color compositions, since in practice white is just an addition to the dominant green in a variety of variations.

The deep green color of the leaves emphasizes the beauty of the white flowers and makes them look even brighter and more attractive. And if the task is to create a lush white flower garden, you should not ignore the nuances of the texture and color of the greenery, which can either enhance the effect or spoil the feeling of dominant whiteness. When decorating white flower beds, you should not be afraid to use coniferous and deciduous shrubs, which can enhance and highlight the beauty of the main stars, enchanting with their whiteness.

To make a bright white flower garden a success, the main thing you need to pay attention to is how it will look in spring and autumn. There are not many white-flowering plants designed for the start and end of the garden season. So that the flower garden does not seem boring or empty at a time when the flowers have not yet opened or the main stars have already left the garden scene, you need to take care of choosing decorative foliage crops with a focus on variegated leaves. They are also important participants in the winter garden show. Don't forget about primroses and evergreen accents.

When choosing a place for a white flower garden, you should think about the background. Such flower beds look better next to large green surfaces - trimmed hedges or lawns. It is better to place them not along the paths, but at some distance. But there are other rules for arranging lush white flower beds:

  1. Plants in such a flower garden must be maintained in perfect condition.
  2. When laying out a flower garden, you need to avoid any flat topography: when planning a white flower garden, you should remember that it should be interesting vertically, combining low-growing plants with lush perennials and high accents.
  3. The contrast in the shapes, sizes of flowers and inflorescences, as well as between the leaves of neighboring crops in such a flower garden is crucial. Small inflorescences and lacy plants should be combined with large flowers and leaves.
  4. Bare soil in a white flower garden is too obvious. When dividing lush-flowered compositions, you need to take care of mulching, which will allow you to create more neat compositions.
  5. If furniture will be placed near the flower bed, and the flower bed itself is decorated with small architectural objects, then the choice should be made in favor of those sculptures and objects that fit perfectly into the style of the garden and will not be too flashy.

Five best perennials for a white sunny flower garden

Persistent Echinacea

Echinacea purpurea of white varieties, for example, the lush variety "White Swan", the slightly taller variety "White Lustr", the low half-meter varieties "Kim's Mop Head", "Finale White", "Cygnet White" can be participants in bright white flower beds.

For decorating a flower bed with a focus on shining white echinacea, it is much more suitable than its relative, nivaria, or any other “white daisies”. The reason is very simple - the timing and duration of its flowering. Varietal echinaceas surprise not only with their abundance, but also with the durability of the inflorescence baskets.

The height of varietal echinacea is usually limited to 60-100 cm. The straight and strong, rough shoots of this perennial are combined with basal broad-oval leaves with a serrated edge, sitting on long petioles, which form a nice rosette-cushion, and with lanceolate sessile stem leaves.

Dark green highlights the numerous apical baskets of inflorescences up to 15 cm in diameter with a typical structure of reed flowers densely arranged in a circle and reddish-brown tubular flowers forming a convex, “spiny” center. The flowering period of Echinacea lasts at least 60 days and begins in July.

Frost resistance degree: from 3rd to 8th zone.

Blooming phlox cushions

It is very difficult to imagine a more luxuriant perennial with caps of inflorescences that almost cover the greenery than Phlox paniculata. Despite the beautiful candy-colored palette of pink shades, phloxes are also very good when choosing a white variety (for example, the legendary sustainable variety “David”, the domestic variety “Maria”, the classic varieties “Archangel” or “Lebedushka”).

Lush phlox bushes in flower beds can easily be confused with snowdrifts. Phlox of white varieties are placed in the background or middle ground of flower beds, revealing all the riot of these perennials.

With a height of 90 to 120 cm, paniculata phlox seems both massive and always attractive plants. Erect shoots and sessile lanceolate leaves create just the background for a real blooming show. The apical inflorescences of phlox turn the bushes into solid colored spots. Tubular, with five bent petals of a flat corolla, reaching 2-4 cm in diameter, the flowers are collected in complex inflorescences. Phlox flowering begins at the end of June and, depending on the variety, lasts until September.

Frost resistance degree: from 4th to 9th zone.

Living silver of velvety clear

The favorite among silvery plants suitable for decorating a flower garden in white tones is Byzantine chistina (Stachys byzantina). By choosing fashionable large-leaf varieties (such as the Big Ears variety), varieties with fluffy white edges (Silky Fleece), or a non-flowering variety (Silver Carpet), you can create the absolute illusion of light silver. The chistets will highlight the compositions at a time when the main perennials do not even begin to wake up.

Byzantine chistets is a very stable, fast-growing, decorative herbaceous perennial almost all year round with straight or branched shoots and amazingly beautiful basal leaves that form continuous carpets. The spatulate leaves, covered with a thick felt edge that is pleasant to the touch, seem like a luxurious fabric.

The flowering of chistets is not as inconspicuous as it might seem. A dense and dense spike, consisting of whorls densely located at the top and sparsely seated at the bottom, pleasantly surprises with the combination of silver and pink tubular flowers. Chistema blooms in May-August; flowering somewhat disturbs the white palette of flower beds, so it can either be prevented or stopped by pruning the flower stalks.

Frost resistance degree: from 4th to 8th zone.

The inimitable stennik

During the transition between spring and summer, it is impossible to find a plant more luxuriantly blooming in white than Iberis sempervirens. An elegant lace of lush inflorescences over bright greenery pleases with both the aroma coming from afar and the feeling of a festive scattering of white lace. Iberis looks dazzling in any company.

Iberis evergreen is a subshrub that received its specific adjective for good reason. The elegant greenery of Iberis actually remains even under the snow. With a height of up to 40 cm, Iberis forms powerful, beautiful turf. The leaves are lanceolate, with a solid edge, a bright dark green color, reach 7 cm in length and sit densely on numerous shoots, forming a bright cushion, the diameter of which is almost twice the height.

Iberis flowers are collected in umbels of inflorescences; they are quite large, up to 1.5 cm, although the structure of individual flowers is difficult to make out. The inflorescences cover Iberis with a blanket so abundantly that the greenery of the plant can only be appreciated when it is placed in the foreground. This perennial has varieties only 10-15 cm high, and more powerful ones, but these are always profusely flowering cultivars.

Non-standard karyopteris

Karyopteris is considered one of the most modern perennials for creating spots of color. Its almost spherical bushes look both elegant and strict. But while the familiar karyopteris is covered with an openwork blanket of blue inflorescences, the best snow-white varieties turn into lacy white balls.

The best white varieties are found in Caryopteris x clandonensis. By choosing time-tested cultivars, such as the interspecific hybrid “Snow Fairy” or the variegated variety “White Surprise” with light lilac flowers, you can decorate your flower beds with unforgettable accents.

Karyopteris are tall herbaceous perennials or subshrubs from half a meter to a meter in height, which naturally develop compactly, form spherical bushes that are not prone to deformation and do not need pruning. The oppositely located lanceolate leaves are painted in a fairly light and bright tone, creating dense branches. Tubular flowers are collected in complex inflorescences.

Five Best Perennials for a White Shady Flower Garden

Weightless clouds of astilbe

Astilbe , presented on the market today with a large assortment of various bright hybrid varieties, offers you to admire not only warm pastel colors. Snow-white astilbes are in no way inferior in popularity to pink varieties.

For example, unique varieties “Bridal Veil” or “Brautschleier” can attract admiring attention. Weightless, lacy, as if covered with a cloud, astilbes are plants that combine unpretentiousness with a spectacular appearance. They are indispensable for decorating flower beds located in the shade.

Astilbes are herbaceous perennials that have earned the nickname false spirea for the beauty of their flowering. Despite the fact that astilbes completely disappear in the winter, during the entire active gardening season, from the moment the first bright leaves bloom until the fruits begin to ripen, one can only admire them.

The basal leaves are triple- or double-pinnate, lacy, with a very beautiful pattern and a rich color that stands out brightly in shady flower beds. Small, almost indistinguishable flowers are collected in huge weightless panicles of inflorescences that bloom in June-July.

Graceful, shy mountain woman

Among the compact perennials that will help create a truly lush white flower garden and easily decorate the foreground of any flower bed in a place where there is modest lighting, lush mountain weed (Epimedium x youngianum) occupies a special place.

This is an elegant perennial that looks very delicate, glowing and forming dense bushes, but the grace of its details can only be seen up close. The plant fully justifies the nickname of the flower of the elves or the bishop's cap and, in fact, is the main competitor of the aquilegia. Mountain weeds have both pink-flowered and white varieties, such as the charming variety 'Niveum'.

Horny goat weeds are lush - herbaceous perennials, limited to a height of 25 cm. The feathery leaves, flaunted by neat “leaflets” of lobes, change color from bronze to dazzling green. On the thinnest, almost thread-like, but strong peduncles, loose inflorescences bloom, consisting of hanging graceful flowers that hover above the plant like fairies.

Shining tears bought

Among the plants that always attract the eye in the shade, the fragrant flower (Polygonatum x odoratum) has rightfully earned the title of a special favorite. Kupena doesn’t have many varieties, but they are all special. Modern varieties obtained on the basis of the variegated medicinal plant flaunt variegated white-green leaves.

The fragrant variety “Solomon Seal” will fit perfectly into a shady white flower garden.

Kupenas are herbaceous perennials with thickened roots and arching shoots that surprise with their strict edges. The height of the bushes is 60-90 cm.

The linear or elliptical leaves of the plant are sessile, hugging the stem, thanks to the elongated base, they are located on the shoots in a regular order, reminiscent of the leaves of Zamioculcas. The color is lighter than most perennials, and the leaves last an amazingly long time.

Flowers bloom in the axils of the leaves. Bell-shaped, drooping on a thin stalk, they seem like a drop or a pearl peeking through the greenery. The whole plant as a whole looks strikingly elegant.

Immodest tiara

Among shade-tolerant perennials, Tiarella wherryi is a true legend. A charming plant with dense bushes of beautiful leaves, covered with an openwork canopy during flowering, will not get lost in any flower garden. Among tiarella varieties of this species, pink new ones are in particular demand, but they lose the brightness of their foliage. If you choose a classic for a white flower garden, the greenery and tiarella blooms are sure to pleasantly surprise you, being in the foreground.

Compact, up to only 30 cm high, with dense bushes of leaves, it amazes with the beauty of large curly leaves of a bright yellowish-green color, forming almost round rosettes. Tiarella Verri does not spread like its relatives, but grows in the form of dense bushes.

Small flowers in loose cylindrical racemes rise on thin dark peduncles, creating an unimaginable lace effect. Star-shaped flowers are very beautiful on their own. And the contrast between light pink or white inflorescences and dazzlingly bright greenery makes flower beds especially elegant. Tiarella blooms in early May for more than a month.

Frost resistance degree: from 4th to 9th zone.

Essential variegated hostas

It would be hard to find an ornamental foliage plant that offers as much delightful variety of white edges, spots or rippling leaves as the garden favorite Hosta . The brightest white border, characteristic of the “Patriot” variety, looks no worse in a flower garden than the inimitable “Undulata”, in which the white spot stretches from the middle to almost the entire plane of the leaf; the almost white variety “Firework” also looks beautiful with thin dark strokes "

Hostas are easily recognizable large-leaved herbaceous perennials. Thanks to their short rhizomes, they constantly grow in width, but this does not change their pattern and ornamentation. Basal, on powerful petioles, heart-shaped or narrow-lanceolate, ovoid or oval leaves create almost imbricated patterns.

But hostas also bloom very beautifully. Bare tall peduncles, in contrast to compact clumps not exceeding 30 cm, grow up to a meter in height and are crowned with clusters of inflorescences made of graceful bells. White-leaved hosta varieties also have white blooms. Among the beautifully flowering varieties there are also specimens with white inflorescences.

Frost resistance degree: from 4th to 9th zone.

How to create a white flower garden: ready-made diagram and assortment of plants

Flower garden for partial shade

The flower garden is intended for semi-shaded places with moist, fertile soil.
It also includes shrubs that thrive in such conditions. Tree hydrangea 'Annabelle' is suitable, completely covered with lush flowers. It blooms almost until September, when the bush is already decorated with faded caps of greenish inflorescences. Blooming hydrangea 'Annabelle'. Photo by the author There is also a lovely variety of tree hydrangea 'White Dome' with openwork flat inflorescences, the edge of which is framed by a delicate necklace of sterile flowers.

Tree hydrangea 'White Dome' will decorate any white flower garden with its delicate inflorescences. Photo by the author

You can take Hydrangea paniculata 'Kyushu' ('Kyushu'), a guest from Japan. This is one of the rare fragrant varieties among hydrangeas of this species. Inflorescences in the form of loose lacy panicles combine fertile and sterile flowers. Blooms from mid-July to September.

There are other varieties whose flowers remain white, such as 'Limelight'. The most beautiful variety 'White Lady', whose sterile flowers have teeth like carnation petals, will also be good in a white garden - something completely special!

In pair with hydrangea we plant a low-growing variety of mock orange. Shrubs serve as a kind of background for other plants and are placed in the depths, conventionally on the 3rd line. The decorative effect of mock orange begins earlier than that of hydrangea, in June.

The herbaceous perennial for this layer is black cohosh. It blooms towards the end of summer; its decorative carved foliage, combined with openwork panicles of inflorescences, decorates the flower garden until the beginning of autumn.

Black cohosh blooms with white spikes of small, fragrant flowers that attract bees. The main advantage is the carved foliage. Photo by the author

In the middle, 2nd tier there will be summer-flowering perennials: loosestrife (lily of the valley) with white drooping tassels of inflorescences, lupins and bells.

They will be replaced by astilbes (for example, the pure white variety 'Rock and Roll' from the Japanese "dance" series), which will be decorative even after flowering due to the expressive dark green dense foliage with a bronze tint. Arends Astilbe 'Weisse Gloria' is also suitable. They must be planted in large tracts, at least 3-5 copies, in order to create a noticeable decorative effect.

Astilbe Arends 'Weisse Gloria' is well recognized by its characteristic diamond-shaped inflorescences. Photo by the author

In the shade of the mock orange, it’s a good idea to plant several large textured ferns, which will fill the space of the flower garden with their fronds. These could be female nomads or even ordinary ostriches. The latter, like male shields, should be planted with a restrictive tape, as they tend to grow greatly.

Kochedyzhnik (left) is suitable for a white flower garden as a filler plant, creating a spectacular background. Non-aggressive. On the right are ostriches. Photo by the author

On the front stage we plant green grass, which is capable of weaving a very expressive white-green carpet in a few years. Fragrant violets or f. would be appropriate nearby. horned (for example, the white-flowered variety 'Alba'), which also grow quite quickly in large clumps and are absolutely unpretentious.

On the left, Zelenchuk creates dense carpets. On the right - you need to be careful with fragrant violet: it quickly fills the spaces allotted to it. Photo by the author

Here, in the first row, you can plant spring small-bulbous plants - galanthus, muscari, white crocuses, which do not require annual digging.

Primroses for a white flower garden: crocuses (1), muscari (2), galanthus (3)

Nearby it would be a good idea to plant an array of hostas of the 'Patriot' variety - these are the brightest of the white-edged ones. Hostas 'Allegan Fog' will also be at home among white-flowered species due to the whitish coloring of the mottled-striped leaves.

As a complement, Brunnera with silvery leaves is appropriate.

The blossoming leaves of the hosta will hide the faded bulbous ones. To maintain decorativeness at the beginning of summer, I recommend planting white begonia, which does very well in partial shade. It will bloom until the first frost.
