Flower pots

What to choose

Flower shop counters offer a large selection of flowerpots made from various materials. Ceramic, plastic, glass, wood – your eyes widen when choosing.

Let's take a closer look at what flower pots there are and which ones are best to purchase for your plants.

A flowerpot with automatic watering is suitable for those who often leave home, or are very busy that they forget to water the flower.

A flower pot with bright lighting will replace a small lamp in your room.

Glass products are suitable for flowers that require constant care.

Plastic pots remain the cheapest; they are easy to care for and look beautiful.

Ceramic products are always popular and in demand.

Pots made from natural materials may not be resistant to moisture, making them less practical.

Matching shape and size

When choosing a flower pot, also pay attention to the correspondence of its shape and size to the shape and size of the flower . Flowers growing as “grass” (calendula, carnations, marigolds, etc.) look good in oblong low ones, as in the photo. Flowers growing in a “bush” (petunias, kalanchoe, roses, begonias, etc.) – in traditionally shaped pots. Flowers growing like an arrow (orchids, callas) - in flower pots of stable, squat shapes, cubic ones are especially good. Compare two pictures:

A traditionally shaped flower pot is not very suitable for an arrow-shaped orchid - the picture loses stability, it seems that the orchid is about to fall. In the photo on the right, an arrow-shaped flower grows in a squat flower pot, and the picture looks very harmonious and elegant.

They are the same size as the visible part of the flower - not very nice when the pot is much smaller or much larger than the flower. You can see a common mistake in the photo on the right - here small Kalanchoes are planted in large flower pots that are much larger than them in size. Everything seems to be fine - the color rhymes with the flowers and sofa cushions, and the same plants stand in a row in the same pots, but due to the fact that they are too large, some absurdity appears in the final picture.

Attracts the eye

Original versions of pots always remain popular. Multi-colored glossy pots of bizarre shapes and stylish matte antipodes will look great in a modern interior.

Flowerpots in the shape of busts of people, where plants imitate hairstyles, look unusual.

Large colored rhinestones decorating the surface of the flowerpot will bring a festive mood to the interior of the room.

A pot from an aquarium, where several plants of different sizes and shapes can coexist, will attract the eye.

Or you can immediately buy an original aquarium pot, where soil is poured on one side and a flower is planted, and a fish swims on the other.

Crown pots specially made for orchids always look elegant and bright.

There is no end to design solutions, and, in addition to ready-made solutions, you can craft and fantasize yourself.

What material should I choose from?

The materials from which they are made are also important. Not every plant will do well in a plastic pot.

And so, flowers develop better in ceramic or wooden pots; they also require, most often, a large space, so the pot should be larger. There are exceptions, albeit few.

For example, chrysanthemums or some varieties of begonias will grow successfully in plastic pots. In turn, herbs will develop better in not very large pots made of ceramic or wood.

The most popular are ceramic flower pots; it is interesting that most often we choose those in white or beige. They are aesthetically pleasing (albeit a rather limited choice of colors), stable, and plant roots will be reliably protected from both freezing and overheating. Their disadvantages include relatively high cost, fragility (they are easily damaged by an accidental blow), and weight. Such a flower pot, of course, would not work if we wanted to hang it.

Of course, flower pots made of plastic and metal (if they are made of thin material) are lighter. The aesthetics, however, leave much to be desired, although the plastic ones are available in a huge selection and are quite cheap. Otherwise, metal ones, for which you have to pay more.

A good choice may be wooden pots, which are usually beautiful, even glamorous. This is a natural material that will look good in different interiors and allows plant roots to breathe. Unfortunately, they are quite expensive and have little resistance to moisture, which can lead to their deformation.

Among the less common types, we can also note concrete flowerpots (rarely used in interiors), glass flowerpots - very impressive and suitable for a modern interior.

So-called gabion pots, which are rather a metal frame into which the pot is inserted, are also suitable for modernist rooms.

Do it yourself

The easiest way is to buy a ready-made flowerpot. But it’s much more interesting to make flower pots with your own hands. After all, it is your work, your ideas that can become a source of pride, and maybe even a whole work of art.

The simplest pots can be made from plastic bottles. Using a stationery knife and scissors, give it any shape and paint the surface with acrylic paints.

Clay pots are also not difficult to make at home if you have a pottery wheel and a kiln. This activity will bring you pleasure and peace of mind.

We decorate and embellish

The simplest ideas for decorating flower pots will help you decorate your home and express your individuality. Flower pots can be decorated with fabric, knitting, or satin ribbons.

It will not be difficult to lay out a pattern of colored mosaics, multi-colored buttons, beads, small stones, and shells. Finally, simply paint with acrylic paints.

Decoupage

To decorate flower pots, you can use various materials, even paper or napkins. You can transfer the selected design from paper to the base using the decoupage technique. This requires:

  • flower pot;
  • glue;
  • tassels;
  • drawing on a napkin or paper;
  • varnish

It is advisable that the base be made of clay, ceramics or glass (but plastic is also suitable) in light colors.

Separate the top layer of the napkin (on which there is a pattern) or take paper (it should be thin) with a pattern, lean it against the pot and gradually cover it with glue. This will fix it on the base and soften a little, taking on the desired appearance (like a pattern on a pot). We wait for it to dry completely and apply varnish to completely fix it and add shine.
