Do-it-yourself corner barbecue made of brick: drawings and photos, step-by-step instructions for building such a barbecue

Selecting a design project

To plan a barbecue, it is necessary to adhere to some stages of action. It is important to follow the exact parameters of the product, then it will be durable and retain its individuality for many years.

Firstly, the stove must remain simple and functional.

Secondly, you must not forget about the appearance of the stove. In various catalogs of famous stove makers, you can, based on photos of brick barbecues, choose the project you like.

Schemes of stationary brick grills

The differences between outdoor fireplaces and traditional brick ovens are as follows:

stationary outbreak

  • a grill or barbecue is built to create comfortable conditions for preparing various dishes in the open air;
  • the design of an outdoor barbecue is much simpler, and the requirements for materials are not so high;
  • Almost every homeowner can build a simple brick outdoor stove at home or in the country;
  • The dimensions and arrangement of the barbecue are chosen arbitrarily depending on the wishes and capabilities of the home owners.

All these features, plus the construction of a foundation in the yard, somewhat simplify the work of laying barbecues; it is a little more difficult to build outdoor garden stoves. The latter are small oven complexes where you can not only fry shish kebab, but also cook a variety of food. But first, we will look at the simplest version of a stationary barbecue, which does not even require a solution.

outdoor garden stove

The structure shown in the photo can be erected in literally half an hour on any flat surface. To stack 4 supports, any brick will do, as long as it is level. The height of the supports is arbitrary, depending on your height, so that you can cook comfortably. Then a slab is placed on top, preferably made of a fire-resistant material, such as concrete or mineralite. Next, a bottom made of red brick (can be hollow) is laid, and then the walls are erected using conventional technology with ligation.

This design is good because it does not require mortar, is quickly erected and transported from place to place. In addition, the height and dimensions of the barbecue are at your discretion, but within reasonable limits so that the structure is stable. Do not forget to install a metal brazier on the brick bottom, and make small cracks in the masonry for air access.

This kind of small barbecue can also be built on mortar by attaching a metal smoke collector in the form of an umbrella on top. Thanks to this, the smoke during cooking will not dissipate in different directions and get into your face. Below is a diagram of a brick grill covered with a concrete slab and an exhaust hood:

There is only one difficulty in constructing this structure - pouring a concrete slab. But if there are small scraps of plywood or OSB and wooden blocks in the household, the issue is resolved quite quickly. The racks are made from the bars, and the formwork panels are made from plywood. To prevent milk from leaking out of the concrete and the plywood from getting wet, the inside of the formwork must be covered with plastic film before pouring. There you need to place a mesh of reinforcement with a diameter of 10-12 mm. The figure shows a diagram of the formwork and the arrangement of the barbecue:

The smoke collector is made of galvanized roofing steel and is attached to the top of the barbecue. It is not recommended to light a fire directly on a concrete slab; it is better to use a metal brazier for this purpose.

Varieties of barbecue

This item is individual in size and design. Therefore, there are two types of barbecues: open and closed.

When the product is an open type, its working surface is not covered. There is a convenient niche at the bottom and a table top at the top.

With a closed structure, the grill is multifunctional and is placed near the wall. An arch is attached to it, and the niches are closed.

In addition, the product comes with some additional components:

  • Tabletop.
  • Place for a kettle.
  • Section for dishes.
  • Place for storing firewood.
  • Sink.

Material for barbecue

This is the next stage. Without a doubt, the best material is brick. The quality of this material must be adequately resistant to high temperatures. Of course, this is fireclay brick.

And the mortar for fastening the brickwork should be clay or sand, so it will make the structure stronger.

Base materials

For the foundation you need to prepare the following building materials:

  • Crushed stone.
  • Stones.
  • Cement.
  • Plywood.
  • Sand.
  • Fittings.

These components will ensure the strength and durability of your product in any weather.

Tools

During construction, you need buckets, a shovel, a trough for mixing cement, trowels of different sizes, a circular saw and a level.

It is recommended to mix the foundation using already proven methods and using working designs. This will make the work easier and reduce the construction time of the structure.

Laying the firebox

This is the name of the central part of the structure, which can be concrete or brick. For the barbecue area, we install a grill in this part.

Installation occurs in the form of fixation on fittings. To ensure the possibility of changing the levels of the gratings, several protrusions must be made at once for this.

Next we construct wind walls and a smoke collector.

We attach the latter to the columns with a consistent reduction in diameter. To protect the product from precipitation, a roof made of available heat-resistant materials is sometimes attached to the grill.

Recommendations for masonry

The simplest brick barbecues for a summer residence are built in compliance with the usual rules for laying stones with bandaging and alignment to level and plumb. Here it is important to prepare a good solution from sifted sand and clay so that there are no pebbles in it. The thickness of the masonry joint on clay mortar is maintained within 5 mm, on cement mortar – up to 10 mm.

Advice. The lower supporting parts of the barbecue can be laid on a cement-sand mortar with a small addition of clay for plasticity.

More stringent rules apply if you need to build a brick barbecue in the form of a yard stove complex:

  • each brick is soaked for 2-3 minutes in a bucket of water;
  • fireclay and ordinary masonry do not tie together;
  • bricks are adjusted and trimmed as a result of fitting. To do this, the row must first be laid out without mortar;
  • the horizontal and vertical of the structure is checked after laying each row of stones.

Advice. If you want to build a barbecue out of brick with a decorative slot-like seam, you must not reach the mortar to the front side of the stone during laying.

In order to better understand the sequence of actions, as an example, step-by-step instructions are provided for laying a brick barbecue grill with cabinets for kitchen utensils. The previous section shows its procedures (Option 3) that must be followed. So, the order of masonry is as follows:

  • from the 1st row to the 8th, the walls of cabinets and a wood niche are erected;
  • 9th row: using templates, the arches of red brick cabinets are laid out, steel corners are placed above the firewood;
  • 10th row: the ceiling of the wood niche is formed from fireproof stones, cut to 18 cm and placed on edge;
  • 11th and 12th rows: all niches are overlapped, while along the entire perimeter the bricks are released outward by a quarter;
  • Along the 15th row, a firebox made of fireclay bricks is laid out. The circle is cut out and installed to form the arch;
  • Along the 20th row, outer walls and a firebox are erected. An arched vault is laid out from fireclay stones, cut “to a wedge”;
  • from the 20th to the 24th row, the bricks are cut so as to gradually move to the chimney cross-section;
  • all the stones of the 24th row are projected out a quarter, then the construction of the chimney follows.

As a result, we get this nice structure:

Finishing and canopy

Finally, we begin the final stage of construction. The canopy can be made in several ways to extend the life of the product. It can cover the grill itself or the entire recreation area. If you stick to the design, it is better to install the canopy over the brazier.

To install a canopy over the barbecue, you need to build concrete wall bases along its perimeter. By the way, they can be made of metal or wood.

It is important that when choosing wooden supports, do not forget to coat them with a special product. Or you can install supports at a distance of about 20 centimeters from the structure.

The roof can be made of any material. The most interesting design technique may be a canopy that matches the overall decoration of the house or its roof.

The grill itself can be left brick, but you still need to sand it with a machine. As an option, you can consider covering the structure with paint. Or decorate the product with a decorated stone.

In addition, to preserve the style of the house, you can plaster the grill. This will give the appearance of your site sophistication and subtle taste.

Location for barbecue

Since a brick grill is a stationary building, you must initially carefully select the most suitable location for placement. Here you need to take into account the following factors:

  • distance from flammable substances and buildings, neighbors’ houses and your own, in order to avoid fire hazards;
  • the presence of free territory around the proposed building area, because it is most convenient when both the recreation area (a gazebo or a table with benches, for example) and the cutting surface are nearby. In addition, you may want to make a canopy over the grill;
  • the possibility of further provision of light and water supply to the selected location;
  • protection from wind blowing.

Next, we will need to decide on a drawing of the brick barbecue that we will build. There are a huge number of different construction options on the Internet. There are simpler ones in design and quicker to manufacture. You don't have to spend a lot of time, effort and finances to build them.

There are also more complex ones. But their advantage is that you can create a truly multifunctional area that will be the pride of your site and a gathering place for the whole family.

You can take either a ready-made one that suits you best in design, size and functionality, or make your own adjustments to the drawing that you like the most.

Step-by-step instructions on how to make a barbecue out of brick with your own hands after choosing the most successful location and drawing includes the mandatory laying of the foundation.

Despite the fact that many consider this item optional, we still insist on doing it. This will make your structure stronger and more durable. Otherwise, there is a high probability that you will have to redo everything literally from scratch.

Installation of the foundation usually occurs in this way: formwork is installed in a hole at least 25 cm deep and filled with cement mortar, then reinforcing mesh or reinforcement rods must be laid. Be sure to wait until the solution has completely hardened. This usually happens within a couple of weeks.

Working with a barbecue

As with any similar product, work with the barbecue must be carried out strictly in compliance with certain rules, including safety precautions.

Firewood should not be ignited with flammable substances (gasoline, acetone). To do this, a special ignition solution must be used.

Use tongs to turn meat on the grill. Clean the product only after it has completely cooled down.

In winter, the structure should be covered with a tarpaulin or oilcloth to prevent its premature destruction.

Do not use drywall to construct an outdoor fire pit. In particular, if the grill has a smokehouse, then under the influence of natural environmental factors it will quickly deform and become unusable.

I would like to add that when starting to perform such painstaking and responsible work, one must stock up on considerable patience.

Then you can fully count on high-quality construction and cooking dishes of unforgettable taste.

A simple way to make a barbecue with your own hands from metal

Making a barbecue with your own hands from sheet metal is not very difficult and anyone can do it. The grill will become a symbol of relaxation for you and a decoration for your home.

Historians believe that the grill was invented in the Middle East. Even in ancient times, the modern brazier made of steel was replaced by a brazier forged from copper. Its appearance resembled a huge bowl, to which legs were attached from below. The top of the roasting pan was covered with a hemispherical lid. Handles were attached to both sides of the brazier, which served for carrying.

For all generations, the barbecue symbolizes relaxation, the opportunity to go out into nature, relax, grill shish kebab and enjoy free time in the company of friends, relatives and acquaintances. Any good holiday should be accompanied by cooking barbecue or other dishes on the grill.

The compact metal grill can be used from early spring to late autumn. Small size and light weight - allows you to load the grill into the trunk of any car and go with the company into nature.

If you have a small area near a private house, you can build a stationary barbecue from stone or brick. But you need to think a little, a stationary grill takes up space on the site, and besides, it is not used that often.

The grill should not be large in size or weight. The metal grill turns out to be quite durable and functional, as shown in the video.

When designing a barbecue drawing, you need to take into account the average number of your friends who are with you on vacation. It has been proven that for an average company of 8-10 people a compact grill with ten skewers is quite sufficient. If necessary, you can make a second portion. While guests are enjoying the exquisite taste of barbecue, you can prepare a second portion of delicious meat. All subsequent actions will be prompted by your imagination. Bon appetit.
